Babies. Newborns hatch unclaimed: a survivor must claim them immediately and hand-feed them until they reach the Juvenile stage (10.1 % matured). Pets set to aggressive attack unclaimed creatures as soon as they hatch. On our ASA maps babies mature ten times faster, with a care request every 48 minutes, so the hand-feeding stage is short, but a baby left alone in it does not last long either.
Troughs. Babies cannot eat from a Feeding Trough until Juvenile. A trough feeds creatures within about 11 foundations horizontally and 15 walls vertically, and a creature eats only food it would eat from its own inventory: no meat for herbivores, no berries for carnivores. The trough icon can appear even when the trough does not hold suitable food; it is not proof that the creature can eat. Food in a trough spoils four times slower, but it still spoils. A juvenile with Cryo Sickness will not eat from troughs. ASA 35.6 changed how often creatures look for food in troughs, at most every 10 minutes.
Nobody near. An area with no player near it is paused (stasis), and food is worked out when the area wakes up. Players found that a healing Daeodon stops healing in stasis while the baby's hunger still counts. ASA 65.3 fixed cases where babies starved before they chose to eat, and a new report from 30/10/2026 is still open.
Our ASE Tribe Logs hold about 10,900 "starved to death" lines, and fewer than one in five of them name a Baby, Juvenile or Adolescent, so check the troughs, not only the babies.
