After a death, a green pillar of light marks where your body lies, and if you reach it you can take your items back. If a carnivore eats the body, a small bag is left; if not, the body itself holds the items, and players report that the spot where you can interact with it is very small.
The beam and the timers are server settings: bUseCorpseLocator switches the beam, and GlobalCorpseDecompositionTimeMultiplier, GlobalItemDecompositionTimeMultiplier and UseCorpseLifeSpanMultiplier scale how long corpses and dropped items last. On default settings, players report that single dropped items despawn after about 2 minutes and a bag made from a whole inventory lasts up to about 90 minutes. This cluster's timers have not been measured, so go back as soon as you can. One ASA player reports that a death bag holds at most 300 items; anything above that is lost.
Some losses were game bugs. ASA v93 (27/08/2026) fixed inventory loss when a creature consumed a body during Genesis Gauntlet Missions, and a separate "Pick Up All Nearby" issue near inventory capacity. Those fixes do not establish that every missing death bag is fixed. A body can also end up inside the terrain: a 2026 ASA report describes being placed underground after dismounting a Desmodus.
On our ASA maps, the AP: Death Recovery mod adds a Recovery Stone. The mod's page says it unlocks at level 25 and lets you recover the items from your latest death. ASE runs no mods, so on ASE your items are only on the body or in the bag.
